Whether it is during my job as an MD or my position as Chief Medical Officer with Lifted View, I frequently get asked about herbal options for managing stress. First, I applaud the effort of someone starting with a natural approach before moving to something more complicated or synthetic. These options have the potential of being addictive or even fatal if overused. In this article, we are going to take a look at the Top 3 Herbs for Managing Stress.

1.) Ashwaghanda:

Five studies compared ashwaghanda to placebo and found that in each study, Ashwaghanda was shown to have a significant reduction in stress and anxiety. Then, in a well conducted study on mice, when compared to Ativan – one of the most commonly overdosed medications in the country – Ashwaghanda had a comparable reduction in stress and anxiety without the potential adverse effects of Ativan.  Moreover, since documented, there has not been a single overdose attributed to Ashwaghanda.  Compare that to the 127,000 emergency department visits for Xanax yearly.

Ashwaghanda has its roots in Ayurvedic medicine – an ancient Hindu traditional medicine based on trial and error.  Early practicioners would often combine marijuana with ashwaghanda to mitigate some of the negative side effects that come with marijuana safely.

2.) L-Theanine and Theobromine:
(Green Tea, Yerba Mate Tea)

Theobromine and L-Theanine have been tested in multiple trials, each suggesting a reduction in stress and factors that cause anxiousness compared to placebo.  In a 2004 study, it was found that giving 200 mg of L-Theanine lead study participants to have a reduction in anxiety and an increase in relaxation.

L-Theanine and Theobromine have been found in teas globally for generations.  Yerba mate tea is a south american drink commonly consumed for stimulating while relaxing properties, and green tea has been consumed in china for generations.

3.) Ginkgo Biloba:

Gingko biloba comes from the maidenhair tree, which is considered to be one of the oldest tree species in the world and even considered to be a “living fossil”.  The herbal product that comes from it – Ginkgo biloba has been used safely for just as long.  It has strongly supported benefits with cognitive function, anxiety reduction, and improving sexual performance without the adverse effects of todays medications.

A double blind, placebo-controlled trial found that when giving ginkgo biloba extract to patients with potential mental decline and underlying general anxiety, there was a statistically significant reduction in anxiety when compared to placebo.  Ginkgo biloba was also not found to have any adverse effects listed in that study.

The natural anxiety blend featured here have also been known as natural herbs for focus. The idea there is that they work together to call the mind so it can focus on the more important tasks at hand instead of feeling anxious or overwhelmed. There are several other herbal supplements used for stress, but those three are definitely the most commonly used and best studied.  For further reading you can also investigate Brahmi, Gotu Kola, and Valerian Root.
